Mandate for the Officials Committee of Karate Alberta Association
The Officials Committee (OC) is responsible for:
The Officials Committee (OC) is responsible for:
- Training officials.
- Certifying officials.
- Organising the officiating at tournaments.
- Clinics and training
- Organise clinics for officials at all levels of experience.
- Advertise and promote clinics for officials.
- Establish criteria for eligibility to attend clinics for certification and/or audit purposes.
- Provide written examinations for officials.
- Provide written examinations suitable for different levels of experience.
- Provide practical examinations for officials. All officials documents can be found here
- Provide appropriate feedback, written and verbal, to officials regarding their performance in practical examinations.
- Give officials and candidates for officials the opportunities to officiate at tournaments at their level of ability and training.
- Certification
- Award appropriate levels of certification to officials.
- Keep a list of certified officials.
- Provide certificates for the certified officials.
- Identify and publish the standards to be met for appropriate levels of certification.
- Budget and Funding
- Submit a budget to Karate Alberta Association (KAA).
- Keep track of the budget for KAA within the limits of the information provided by the treasurer.
- Establish criteria for funding eligibility.
- Identify those officials who are eligible for funding to either national or international events.
- Inform eligible officials of the availability of funding and provide an estimate of the funding available for that event.
- Board of directors and committees
- Submit reports, from time to time, to the board of directors of KAA about the functioning of the OC and the state of the finances.
- Make recommendations to the KAA about changes needed for the OC and the officials.
- Liaise with other committees of KAA in order to facilitate events promoted by KAA.
- Safety of athletes
- Train officials in requirements of athlete safety and how officiating can influence such safety.
- Observe athletes for their ability, or lack of ability, to compete in a safe manner.
- Be custodians of the records of injuries sustained at tournaments.
- Advise KAA on how such records could be made and collated.
- Make recommendations when athletes who appear to be unsafe are identified.
- Use established KAA policy and procedure to facilitate hearings for athletes who may be unsafe.
- Use established KAA policy and procedure to facilitate hearings for officials who are not doing their jobs appropriately including causing safety issues.
- Officials Committee
- Appointment to the officials committee is subject to approval of the KAA board of directors.
- Criteria for appointment
- Members: OC members will have certification as officials, provincially or nationally.
- Chief Official: (Approved by KAA board - Dec 2003)
- The Chief Official for the Karate Alberta Association will be recommended to the Board by the Officials' Committee.
- The Board will either ratify the selected candidate or
- Ask the OC to select another.
- The position of Chief Official for the Karate Alberta Association will normally be for two years, renewable.
- The Board may ask that a new Chief Official be chosen at any time at its own discretion.
